Baby Porridge: When & How to Start Weaning

Baby Porridge: When & How to Start Weaning

Introducing solid food is one of the most significant milestones in a baby's first year — and cereal porridge is typically the first step. Grain-based foods play an important role in early development: they provide sustained energy, support digestive function, and deliver a meaningful range of vitamins and minerals. But knowing when to start, what to choose, and how to introduce it correctly makes a real difference to how smoothly the transition goes.

When Is the Right Time to Start?

Most packaging states that baby porridge can be introduced from four months, but this is a guideline, not a universal rule. Readiness varies significantly between babies, and starting too early — before the digestive system is adequately developed — can cause unnecessary discomfort. Rather than watching the calendar, watch your baby. Three signs of readiness are worth looking for: the baby seems unsatisfied after a full milk feed, shows genuine interest in food being eaten by adults, and can hold their head upright and sit with support. When all three align, it's a reasonable time to try.

Which Porridge to Start With?

For the very first attempts, dairy-free, gluten-free cereals are the safest starting point. Rice and maize (corn) porridges digest most easily, and preparing them with breast milk or the formula your baby already knows makes the flavour familiar and the transition gentler. This matters both for acceptance and for digestive tolerance.

Gluten-containing grains — semolina, wheat, and multigrain blends — can be introduced after a few weeks, once the digestive system has had time to adapt. Milk-based versions can follow at the same stage. Buckwheat porridge deserves special mention: it's naturally gluten-free, rich in plant protein and minerals, and widely considered one of the most nutritionally complete options for young babies. Millet is another excellent early choice — gentle, well-tolerated, and a good source of iron and B vitamins. Our children's nutrition collection includes certified organic porridge options suitable from the earliest stages of weaning.

How to Prepare and Serve It

Always follow the manufacturer's preparation instructions — the liquid-to-powder ratio matters more than it might seem. Too thick and you risk constipation; too thin and the baby won't get enough nutrition or caloric density to replace a milk feed. Serve at a comfortable warm temperature (always test on your wrist first), and use a soft, flat-bowled weaning spoon that sits naturally in the baby's mouth and makes the mechanics of early eating easier to learn.

At the start, expect most of the first few spoonfuls to end up on the baby rather than in them — this is entirely normal. The goal initially is exposure and habituation, not volume. As your baby becomes more comfortable, you can add age-appropriate fruit purées to the porridge for natural sweetness and variety. Explore our feeding accessories for suitable spoons, bowls, and bottle options for thicker foods.

How Often and When During the Day?

A useful principle when expanding a baby's diet: replace one milk feed with one solid meal, rather than adding porridge on top of existing feeds. One portion per day is enough to begin with, rising to a maximum of two once the baby is clearly comfortable with the process.

Timing matters too. Porridge in the morning provides energy for active play; porridge at dinner can help extend sleep, as the sustained energy release from complex carbohydrates prevents early waking from hunger. For evening feeds, choose unsweetened, wholegrain varieties without added cocoa or stimulating ingredients — and avoid any product with added sugar, which disrupts insulin balance and creates short-lived satiety. A calming botanical addition like linden flower extract is worth looking for in evening porridges.

What to Look for on the Label

Not all baby porridges are equal. The ingredient list is the only reliable guide — ignore the packaging design and even the age recommendations, which are not always conservative enough. What to look for: whole grain as the main ingredient, natural additions only (dried fruit, no concentrates), and short, recognisable ingredient lists. What to avoid: added sugar, artificial sweeteners, synthetic flavourings, artificial colours, and preservatives. Organic certification provides additional assurance that the grain base is free from pesticide residues.

For babies who are also being breastfed, it's worth ensuring maternal nutritional intake supports the quality of breast milk during weaning. Our children's health range also includes targeted supplements for infants, including DHA for brain development and liquid calcium and iron for babies who may need additional support as solid food intake gradually increases.

Research consistently shows that babies may need 10–15 exposures to a new taste before accepting it. Offer it again a few days later, in small amounts, without pressure.] [warning:Never add honey to porridge for children under 12 months — it carries a risk of infant botulism. Avoid cow's milk as the main liquid for preparing porridge before 12 months. Always supervise feeding and ensure the baby is in an upright or semi-upright position.] [note:All products at Medpak ship from within the EU — fast delivery, no customs fees, wherever you are in Europe.
